Why Genuine Leather Still Beats Synthetic — A Craftsman's Perspective
By Suresh Patil
We get asked this a lot, and we'll give you a straight answer: for durability and how a shoe ages over time, genuine leather still wins — not because synthetic is bad, but because of what leather actually does that synthetic can't.
Leather breathes. It moves with your foot instead of against it. And critically, it ages — creasing and softening in ways that actually improve fit and comfort over months of wear, rather than just wearing out.
Synthetic materials have real advantages too — they're often lighter, more water-resistant out of the box, and more affordable. There's a place for both, depending on what you need a pair of shoes to do.
But if you're asking which one we'd put our name behind for something meant to last years, not months — that's genuine leather, every time.
